When you cannot pray as you should, or prepare yourself for it, is it necessary to abandon prayer altogether?

On the contrary, you must force yourself to pray, even if your heart resists it. And the Lord, seeing our compulsion and violence to pray, gives His help, according to the words of Saints Macarius and Peter Damascene:

He who gives prayer to him who prays well with simple prayer, the Lord gives the gift of mental prayer to him who prays well with simple prayer.
